I have nightmares along these lines and I don’t like it at all. You encapsulated the core feeling of loneliness and how it distributes despair throughout a person’s life.
Having experienced 'night terrors' numerous times while I worked 24hr shifts I can say you summed it well. Unless you have experienced it you cannot completely convey the trapped feeling in that state which is neither awake nor asleep, maybe drowning is close.
